Bourbon and Bubbly – BJVIM Charity Evening of Photography
Although a last minute engagement, I was invited with my wife to attend the Beaufort and Jasper Volunteers in Medicine Charity evening in Bluffton Old Town, as the event photographer. The request came on recommendations of my photography at the recent Tiger Bass Race in Hampton Lake. This was the first time I have had the opportunity to participate with such a large event, plus evening photography, trying to capture the colors and to capture the atmosphere of the varied activities throughout. The evening had started with guest arrivals and a happy hour atmosphere, with appetizers, oysters, bourbon tasting and champagne. Background music and entertainment was provided by Dean St Hillaire, with his steel drum and guitars. This was followed after dusk by the Voices of El Shaddar Choir, which prompted the start of the evening’s dinner and auction event. The choir performed on stage as the guests took their seats and continued to perform through the first course of dinner. Extremely uplifting performance and very colorful. Throughout the arrivals, happy hour and during the whole evening I was busy around and about trying to capture the evening images, and also some candid photos as the guests mingled.
Obviously trying to enjoy the evening, and the dinner event was a challenge as I wanted to try and capture a wide range of photographs for the organizers of the event.
Speakers and organizers were also captured with photos, likewise the auctioneer and the guests participating. Overall the event seemed to work out quite well, with a the number of guests, organization, and entertainment.
From my perspective, having the opportunity to capture a large event, was always great experience, and using my D800, D4, speed lights with two different lenses set for the evening worked out well. Overall a reasonable set of quality images captured which the organizers were pleased with.
From this event, I was subsequently requested and hired to photograph images at the BJVIM clinic in Bluffton for an article that was being prepared for publishing in a local magazine in the Hilton Head Island/Bluffton area.
